Title: Joe and Jo's Flyer (2006)
Client: The Experts / Véronique Diabolique / Blackstrap
Goal: Flyer to announce music show in downtown Durham, NC. I'm not involved in efforts to revitalize downtown Durham, but as a Durham resident I'm supportive of the efforts. I wanted to create a special flyer that would show pride in the downtown area.
Solution: Re-created club and surrounding street with Legos. Included figures and vehicles to show an active scene. Hidden jokes include Blackstrap's drummer skateboarding, Véronique Diabolique hiding on top of a building, a construction sign, and Star Wars characters.
Result: Fans and musicians requested copies, and the club owner hung a framed copy in her club. The image was forwarded to neighborhood listservs and online newsletters. A huge crowd attended the show and the club owner was quite pleased. Flyer won Honorable Mention for Poster Design in the NC AIGA Boom Biennial Show (2007).  See more of my posters at Gigposters.com.

Title: Pinhook Flyer (2010)
Client: Véronique Diabolique
Goal: Flyer should grab attention quickly since it will compete with numerous other flyers in a variety of environments (walls, bulletin board, online, etc.)
Solution: Large, bold silhouette catches eye; clean design and simple text makes it easy and quick to read.
Result: Positive comments when posted on Facebook, and print copies were eagerly accepted by fans before and after the show.  One out of town fan requested a print.

Title: Album Art for Slim Case: VDCP+2 (2006)
Client: Véronique Diabolique
Goal: Design package for a special edition of the band's first CD, "Carte Postale." Match the art style of the band's previous CD, flyers, and website.
Solution: Incorporate art from the original CD: thumbnail of the original cover on the back with the song list; close-up of the face for the front.
Result: The band and their fans appreciated the design.

Title: Dork Fest 2 Flyer (2007)
Client: Mini rock festival with six music acts
Goal: Dorky and fun.
Solution: Combine two nerd/geek themes: Legos and Devo.
Result: The poster was very popular and generated discussion online via emails and GigPosters.com.  The poster was also appreciated by the music acts and may have helped them feel better about participating in small, uncertain music event.  The event itself went very well and had a large crowd.

Title: NC Health Physics Society (2006)
Client: NIEHS / NC Health Physics Society
Goal: Client provided text for the poster and suggested a mountain graphic to represent the meeting site: Asheville, NC.
Solution: I researched mountain images of western North Carolina and drew the illustration. I tweaked the colors and did test prints to confirm suitable contrast between the blue mountain sections.
Result: Client approved the poster.

Title: Interdisciplinarity in Practice (2007)
Client: Duke University Scholars Program
Goal: An artistic looking poster that includes an image related to one of the presentations.
Solution: Some of the presentations titles (i.e., "Visualizing the Invisible") don't offer easy graphic solutions. I researched the areas of study and focused on the keynote topic of constructal theory. The river delta image symbolizes one of the ideas of constructal theory, and the flowing letters represent areas of study merging and relating to each other.
Result: The client and the keynote speaker were very happy with the poster.

Title: Album Art for Unreleased CD: Demo (2010)
Client: Véronique Diabolique
Goal: Design package for a demo CD with two songs.
Solution: Match mood of songs and style of band.
Result: Unknown

Title: Fan-Tan Flyer (2009)
Client: Fan-Tan and Véronique Diabolique
Goal: Striking image to stand out against other gig flyers.
Solution: Most band flyers are done on computer, so this flyer, which was cut and assembled by hand, easily stood out against all the other gig flyers that week.
Result: Bands and fans liked the flyer.

Title: NIEHS Earth Day (2004)
Client: National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
Goal: An eye-catching poster that generates greater interest in NIEHS Earth Day activities.
Solution: NIEHS is a science research institute, and the halls are lined with scientific posters and official announcements. I selected a cartoon style that stood out from the other posters and mimicked art designs from the 1960-70 period, when the idea of Earth Day originated.
Result: The poster was noticed and talked about during the weeks before Earth Day. The poster design was reused the following year.
